Even with the best network security, threat management system, intrusion detection system, intrusion prevention system, robust firewall rules or heavy physical security – your electronic data may not be safe from a determined hacker.
Information security professionals, information security researchers and ethical hackers have finger printed information from nothing more than the reflection of a computer on your spectacles, sound of a typewriter, sounds emanating from a printer, reflection of a computer on your eyeball , the vibrations generated by a coffee cup when someone speaks nearby or by lip-reading.
All these type of attacks which does not require network protocol or ports for exploitation is known as “SIDE CHANNEL ATTACK”.
This category of attack has failed the approach of securing information which resides inside the computer system or network. Side Channel Attack exploits the unprotected area where computer meets the real world: nearby keyboard, monitor or printer, at a stage before the information is encrypted or after it has been translated into human readable form.
“THESE ATTACKS ARE DIFFICULT TO DEFEND AGAINST AND IMPOSSIBLE TO TRACE”
These types of attacks leave no logs or evidence of their occurrence. According to researchers if there is some confidential information, then it is only a matter of time until some determined personnel tries to steal it.
